The Way The Sea Took Us

Liberty Bay Poulsbo, WA

……. …………………………………………………………..

Where quiet waters held our laughter,
and the night sky knew our secrets,
we cast off from the edges of ordinary,
sailing into the hush between heartbeats.

Your hand in mine,
we let the salt air write our story—
a compass drawn in glances,
a chart made of trust and tides.
Every wave carried wonder,
every breeze bent toward belonging.

The sea was ours then—
open, boundless, forgiving.
We spoke in silence,
under sails stitched with starlight,
anchoring only in each other.

But even oceans stretch too wide.
We didn’t feel the stillness at first—
the wind held its breath,
and we stood without direction.
Our ships drifted, slow and silent,
parting like thoughts unspoken,
and I lost my way
mistaking a shadow for your sail.

Now I am lost at sea—
adrift in memory,
calling out in the language of gulls and ghosts,
where only the water remembers
the course we once charted.

And somewhere, I believe,
beneath this same sky,
you remember too—
the way the sea took us,
not to leave us,
but to change us.
